Australia’s School Mathematics Curriculum and Education Policy

This session will be on Australia’s School Mathematics Curriculum and Education Policy presented by Justine Sakurai, Lecturer, University of Melbourne, Australia. Register online.
Australia’s federated education system presents a compelling case study in curriculum policy reform. This presentation traces how national curriculum standards, assessment frameworks, and professional learning have been sequenced to integrate computational thinking, data science, and AI into K–12 mathematics.
Central to this work is Australia’s innovative computational thinking framework. It embeds algorithmic reasoning and mathematical modelling as foundational practices, not standalone additions.
Drawing on the current Australian Curriculum (Standards) and state-level responses, the session offers concrete insights into policy, curriculum, and assessment design that drives equitable and sustainable integration across mathematics education.
